People often tell me that public speaking is their biggest fear and are puzzled that I willingly choose to do it. It’s not that the idea of messing up my lines or tripping Jennifer Lawrence style doesn’t make me feel nauseous, it’s just that the adrenaline I get off a buzzing crowd overpowers it. You don’t get that kind of energy from speaking to a camera.
I’ve hosted events like the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, launched cars for wicked brands like Lexus and taken the stage numerous times for Cityscape. I’ve awarded all sorts of talents, whether rising stars for corporate award ceremonies like Etisalat or internationally recognized chefs for Gourmet Abu Dhabi. But I have to admit, I love nothing more than taking part of an event that celebrates a company’s own employees, like Sacoor Brother’s annual Oscars which finds everyone laughing and dancing up a storm though the night.
I also love being part of events that seek to make a lasting difference. A fundraising event for Make A Wish Foundation actually left me in tears. As a new and working mom, I was so inspired to take part in a regional initiative by Philips to encourage breastfeeding in the workplace. And then, of course, there are all those intimate events where you get to present for, bond with and then have a blast with your audience – Just Kidding, UPPABaby, Fun City, Orange Wheels… a list that goes on.
So whenever I’m behind the curtains, waiting to go on stage and the butterflies begin fluttering, I remind myself that by the end of the night, I’ll be on a high and counting down the days to the next one.
